Punishment that went too far

A grade 3 student who was allegedly punished by a female teacher was hospitalised after sustaining injuries.

The grade 3 student of Balangoda Sri Buddha Jayanthi Junior College was discharged from Balangoda Base Hospital after treatment.

The student is alleged to have brought a card with stickers to school and the teacher had allegedly punished him by caning him with a bamboo rod.

The child's parents had decided to remove the child from the school.

Zonal Education Office, Balangoda director has launched an investigation into the incident.

A complaint has been lodged with Balangoda Police.

Meanwhile, a teacher was taken into custody by Horana Police for allegedly punishing an A- L student at a school in Horana.

The student was allegedly slapped 20 times by the teacher for bringing a mobile phone to school.

The student had bled from his nose and was admitted to Horana Hospital, school sources said.

The student's parents had lodged a complaint with Horana Police. Sources said the Principal had given the student permission to bring the phone to school.

Investigations are continuing.
