Principal arrested for alleged fraud

The Principal of Malwana Al Mubarak National School was arrested by the Biyagama police on Tuesday (13) afternoon.

The arrest was made by a police party led by Crimes OIC A G Y S Keerthisinghe, following a warrant issued by the Gampaha Magistrate's Court. A large number of parents had lodged a complaint against the present Principal, alleging some financial fraud and seeking a refund of money collected from students for English and computer courses conducted through an institute.

Following the complaint, Police had tried to investigate the matter, but the Principal had allegedly failed to appear for an inquiry in this regard. However, students of the school had staged a protest against the arrest of the Principal during school hours on the Malwana main road, which had hampered vehicular traffic for a couple of hours. Police and the Army were deployed to control the tense situation during the protest. The Principal of the school was released on bail and ordered to appear in court for further inquiry on March 21, Biyagama Police acting OIC Ajith de Silva said.
