Recognition for apparel industry youth
The Kalutara phase of the island wide campaign for promoting the
Apparel Industry was recently concluded with Kalutara Apparel Star mega
show at the Kalutara Public Ground. Chief Guest of the occasion was
Ports and Highways Deputy Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardana.
He said the talented youth in the apparel industry is a blessing to
the country.
"Apparel Industry makes the biggest contribution to country's
revenue. You are a valued resource to us. If there was a time this
industry and your job was not recognized in the society, that period is
over. Today everybody acknowledges your contribution to the economy and
respects you for your service to the country," the deputy minister as he
inspired the audience.
Sixty eight contestants from 13 garment factories from Kalutara area
performed at the event.
The Apparel Star programme is a part of the Image Building,
Recruitment and Retention drive conducted by the Joint Apparel
Association Forum (JAAF) in collaboration with Commerce and Industrial
Affairs ministry. The objectives of the campaign are to raise the image
of the industry, improve labor recruitment and retention and raise
awareness on the industry's contribution to Sri Lanka's economy.
The campaign which is expected to cover all the nine provinces of Sri
Lanka started in February, 2011, from the Buththala 'Deyata Kirula'
premises and has already covered the areas of Puttlam, Polonnaruwa,
Kanthale, Punani, Trincomalee, Kurunegala, Kaluthara and Kandy.
