Navy saves four teenagers

Timely action by the Navy Life Saving Team from the SLNS Vijaya,
Kalpitiya of the North-Western Naval Command saved the lives of four
teenagers who were in difficulty in the seas off Talawila on March 8.
The incident occurred around 3.30 pm. One teenager was rushed to Puttlam
General Hospital for further medical treatment.
Campaign to eradicate rabies
The Health Ministry has intensified its rabies eradication programmes
by carrying out a sterilization campaign in the Kurunegala and Puttalam
districts of the North Western Province.
Accordingly, 75,000 dogs will be sterilized this year. Twelve
veterinary surgeons have been employed for this purpose by the Health
Services Department.
Publication launch
Pancha Purana Thothirath Thirattu (Compilation of ancient vedic
prayers), the first publication of the Hindu Association of Lake House
will be launched today at the Sangarampillai Hall of the Tamil Sangam at
Rudra Mawatha, Wellawatte.
The book compiled by Kalabhooshanam S Sellathurai contains 10 prayers
each of the four nayars respected by the Hindu religion.
Lake House Chairman Bandula Padmakumara will launch the book and
Hindu Cultural Affairs director Shanti Navukkarasan will receive the
first copy.
Lake House Editorial Director Seelaratne Senerath, Finance Director
Shan Shanmuganathan and General Manager Abaya Amaradasa will also
participate.
Seminar
A seminar on 'The challenges we face from international forces'
organised by the Government Information Department and the Sri Lanka
Foundation Institute (SLFI) will be held at the Sri Lanka Foundation
Institute on March 12 at 2.30pm.
It will be held under the patronage of acting Mass Media and
Information Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena. Rupavahini chairman
Mohan Samaranayake and attorney at law Gomin Dayasiri will deliver
lectures on 'Identifying the international forces that are against Sri
Lanka' and 'The challenges we have in the face of international forces
against Sri Lanka.'
This is the first in the series of seminars organised by the
Government Information Department and the SLFI.
Music CD launch
Kurulu Thudin , a maiden music CD presented by Colombo Medical
Faculty consultant surgeon and senior lecturer Dr. D J Anthony will be
launched at the Colombo Ananda College Kularatne hall on March 11 at 6
pm.
Lyrics for all songs have been penned by Bandulasiri Hewagamage
assisted by Dr. Melani Amarasooriya and Dr. B M C Dissanayake. The
melodies are by Dr. Anthony.
Prof Carlo Fonseka and film star Ravindra Randeniya will deliver
brief lectures at the launching ceremony.
Seminar, panel discussion
The Organisation of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka (OPA) has
organised a public seminar and panel discussion on Prevention of Non
Communicable Diseases in Sri Lanka, on March 23 from 6 to 8.30 pm.
Resource persons will be drawn from among senior medical
professionals specializing in this field. Environmental aspects will
also be discussed.
Sing - A -Long 2012
Sing - A - Long 2012, a fund raiser organised by the Sri Lanka
Housewives' Association will be held today from 6.30pm at JAIC Hilton
Residence, Union Place, Colombo2.
It will be hosted by Faizal Bongso. Umara and Umaria, Shiran Sylva
and Sandaruwan will also participate.
Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Cancer Transit Home,
Maharagama.
Public lecture
Professor Ralph Martins, a world leader of research into Alzheimer's
disease will deliver a public lecture on 'Early diagnosis and
prevention' on March 15 at 6 pm at the Lanka Alzheimer's Foundation
auditorium, 10, Ketawalamulla Lane, Colombo 10.
All are welcome.
Annual debate
The annual debate for the Leelananda Memorial Trophy between Anula
Vidyalaya, Nugegoda and Isipathana College, Colombo will be held at the
Anula Vidyalaya main hall on March 16.
The Past Pupils' Association of Anula Vidyalaya and Isipathana
College have organised the competition in memory of S Leelananda, a past
Principal of Anula Vidyalaya and T E de S Leelananda, a past Principal
of Isipathana College.
National Tobacco and Alcohol Authority chairman Prof Carlo Fonseka
will be the chief guest.
Ghazal performances
The Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo, in association with the Culture
and Arts Ministry and Governor's Secretariat, Municipal Council and the
Department of Culture, Eastern Province, is organizing Ghazal concerts
at Galle, Kalmunai, Kandy and Colombo.
The first concert of Dr Kumud Diwan will be on March 14 at 6.pm at
Halle de Galle, Galle.
Her second concert will be on March 16 at 7 pm at Santhankeni
playground, Kalmunai. The Kandy concert will be held at the auditorium
of the Assistant High Commission of India on March 17 at 6.30pm.
The final concert will be held in Colombo on March 19 at 6pm at
Kularathne Hall, Ananda College, Colombo.
Seminar
A two day seminar on agricultural bio-technology for sustainable
development jointly organised by the Higher Education Ministry and the
Ruhuna, Peradeniya and Colombo Universities with the assistance of the
Microbiology Department of the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkhar Marathwada
University of India will be held at the BMICH, Colombo on March 12 and
13.
A
woman admitted to Ingiriya Hospital and later transferred to Horana
Hospital by the police after she was found fallen on the road near
Palpitigoda Lake, Poruwedanda had died yesterday. The woman was unable
to speak when the Police admitted her to hospital. The woman had several
injuries. The woman is aged between 55 and 60 and she had hair up to her
waist. She was dressed in a blue checked skirt and white blouse.
Ingiriya Police seek public help to identify the body.
