Funds for Asgiri Maha Viharaya reconstruction
Prime Minister D M Jayaratne in his capacity as Buddha Sasana and
Religious Affairs Minister handed over a cheque for Rs 20 million to
Navy Commander Vice Admiral Somathilaka Dissanayaka for the
reconstruction of the Asgiri Maha Viharaya.

Prime Minister Jayaratne handed over the cheque to the Navy Commander
at Visumpaya on Thursday.
The Navy provided expertise and labour for the construction work.
Rs 100 million has been allocated for the reconstruction of the
Asgiri Maha Viharaya reconstruction on account of the Asgiri Vihara
Chapter completing 700 years of being set up.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa allocated funds, in response to a request
made by the Prime Minister for the reconstruction of the Asgiri Viharaya.
Prime Minister Jayaratne said that under the guidance of President
Rajapaksa, he has taken steps towards the construction of all temples
and viharayas in the country.
"The 2600th Sri Sambuddhathva Jayanthi saw a reawakening in Buddhism
in the country," he added.
"The government has given priority to develop religious places in the
North and East, especially Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaithivu, Vavuniya,
Batticaloa and Trincomalee districts. The government has spent a
colossal sum for the reconstruction work of kovils too," the Prime
Minister said. |
