Indian Communist Party supports Lanka

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has stated that it was against an international inquiry into alleged human rights allegations against the Sri Lankan government during the offensive against the LTTE, party's central committee leader T K Rangarajan said.

Favouring an inquiry by the government itself, he said: "A credible inquiry should be conducted into the atrocities. Sri Lanka is a sovereign nation and a friend of India."

To a query on the party's stand on the demand for a separate Tamil Eelam, he said: "We have always supported a unified Sri Lanka with equal rights for all citizens."

When asked whether the CPM, claiming to be a Marxist-Leninist party, had abandoned the principle of self-determination rights for nationalities, he said a decision should not be imposed on the Sri Lankan people from outside. It was for the people of the island to decide. When asked whether people's wish should be ascertained from a referendum, he rejected it.
