Heavy fine on power pirate

A suspect who was found guilty of illegally tapping power from the national electricity grid was fined Rs 25,000 by the Matara Chief Magistrate Udesh Ranatunga. In addition the accused was ordered by the magistrate to pay Rs 280,422 as compensation to the Ceylon Electricity Board.

A team of investigation officers attached to the Special Investigation Unit of the CEB made this detection and prosecuted in the Matara Magistrate's Court.


Residential programme

A special two day residential programme for government MPs and ministers will be held today and tomorrow in Diyatalawa under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The programme covers topics such as economy, political communication, political and administrative reforms, national security and social and collective responsibility.

Seniors and specialists in relevant fields will conduct lectures during the programme. Government MPs, ministers and deputy ministers will take part in this programme.


Panel discussion

The Sri Lanka Women's Conference has organized a panel discussion on Women, Peace and Re-construction to mark the International Women's Day on March 8 at 10am at the Mallika Niwasa Samithiya, 45, Visakha Road, Bambalapitiya.


Workshop

Office staff attached to Parliamentarians and minister in the North Central Province will attend a two day workshop organised by the Parliamentary Affairs Ministry at the Anuradhapura Bank of Ceylon holiday resort on March 5 and 6.


Awards day

Harcourts International School will conduct their annual awards day at the S D S Jayasinghe Hall, Dehiwala on March 6 from 2pm.

Justice Ministry Secretary Kamalini de Silva will be the chief guest.


Taste of Malay culture

The cultural show, Rasa Budaya Melaya - a taste of Malay culture, organised by the Sri Lanka Malay Association Women's Affairs Committee will be held at the Bishop's College auditorium on March 11 at 6pm.

The programme will feature Malay cultural dances and traditional costumes in artistic dance forms. It will also feature Malay music renditions by the anklun orchestra, a unique Malay instrument.

Rasa Budaya Melayu is brought in the form of a story, bringing out the essence of life in a Malay environment. The traditional Malay wedding will be one of the highlights of the show.

The show will be choreographed by Rufin Saldin assisted by Malrene Lantra.


CD launching ceremony

Kurulu Thudin, a maiden music CD presented by consultant surgeon and senior lecturer, Colombo Medical Faculty Dr D J Anthony will be launched at a ceremony at the Colombo Ananda College Kularatne Hall on March 11 at 6pm.

Lyrics for all songs have been penned by Bandulasiri Hewagamage assisted by Dr Melani Amarasuriya and Dr B M C Dassanayake. The melodies are by Dr Anthony.

Prof Carlo Fonseka and film star Ravindra Randeniya will deliver lectures at the launching ceremony.
