Havana Benail painting exhibition

The Cultural Affairs Department has taken steps to provide an opportunity for artists in Sri Lanka to present their creations to the 11th Havana Benail Bi- Annual Painting Exhibition held from May 11 to June 11 in Hawana city, Cuba.

The exhibition is organized by the Wifredo Lam Contemporary Arts Centre participated by many countries. Sri Lankan painters who are keen on participating in the exhibition can send their creations with the application form before March 10.

Their paintings should be written on a CD. Paintings should be send to the Secretary, Arts and Sculpture Panel, Department of Cultural Affairs, 8th Floor, Sethsiripaya, Battaramulla. Contact 011-3188873 for details.


Ladies' College Quiz Night

The Ladies' College Old Girls Association (OGA) Executive Committee will host a Quiz Night on March 6 at the school old hall from 6 pm.

This is an effort to reach out to a broad base of past pupils.

The quiz will be conducted by experienced quiz masters. Participation is open to teams of five to seven members.

Tickets priced at Rs 1,200 (inclusive of dinner) are available at the OGA Secretariat (Tel2575469) and the school office.


Book launch

The launch of the book Handy Perinbanayagam memorial volume and Jaffna Youth Congress edited by Santasilan Kadirgamar will be held on March 4 at 5.30 pm at Saraswathy Hall, Bambalapitiya.

The chief guest will be Indian High Commissioner Ashok K. Kantha.


Five estate worker hit by lightning

An estate worker died and four others were injured when they were struck by lightning at the Dunkanda estate, Idigas Hinna, Haputale on Tuesday. Despite of inclement weather, they had been working in the estate when they got caught in the lightning. The injured are being treated at Haldummulla hospital.

Haputale Police are investigating.

Buddhist talk

Asoka Mahinda Jayasinghe will deliver a public talk in English on Anapanasati Sutta (mindfulness in breathing) at the meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society on Saturday, March 3 at 4.30 pm at Maithree Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.

The 64th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Cancer Society will be held on March 2 at 5 pm at 37/25, Bullers Lane, Colombo 7. Professor of Surgery, University of Kelaniya Medical School, Prof K I Deen will be the chief guest on the occasion.


Past cricketers' annual dinner

The Royal-Thomian past cricketers annual dinner will be held at the Atrium Lobby, Cinnamon Grand on Tuesday, March 6 at 7.30 pm and not on Wednesday, March 7.
