Man with heroin netted

The Police Special Task Force arrested a man with heroin worth more than Rs 100,000 at Dematagoda.

A group of STF personnel led by Chief Inspector D P U Kodithuwakku arrested the suspect who was in possession of 14.35 grams of heroin on Monday.

The suspect and the drug haul were handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau.


Cancer Society AGM

The 64th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Cancer Society will be held at 37/25, Bullers Lane, Colombo 7 on March 2 at 5 pm. University of Kelaniya Medical School Professor of Surgery K.I. Deen will be the chief guest.


Death of Lake House correspondent

Lake House senior provincial correspondent Zakkariya M Razeek passed away yesterday. He started his journalistic career in 1968.

Earlier, he served as Akurana provincial correspondent and later as Kandy provincial correspondent.

He was a Kandy Courts staff reporter at the time of his death. He was a father of two.

Janaza will take place at the Mahiyawa Muslim cemetery today at 9 am.


Bodhi Pooja ceremony

The Public Services Nurses Union is organizing a Bodhi Pooja ceremony to invoke blessings on the country, the government and Security Forces personnel will be held tomorrow (March 01) at Sri Abhayarama Pirivena Viharaya , Narahenpita at 5 p.m. Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena and members of the general public will participate .


Anniversary

The The 20th anniversary celebration of Telijjawila Central College Past Pupils Association - Colombo Branch will be held on March 03 at 9. a.m at the college main hall. Retired Central Bank deputy governor K.G.D. Dharma Dheerasinghe, Deputy Secretary of Treasury Dayananda Vidhanagamachchi, Dean of faculty of Zoology of the Kelaniya University Prof Upali S Amarasinghe will also participate in the special guests.


Trinity ITRC to be opened

A state-of-the-art Information Technology Resource Center will be ceremonially opened in Trinity College tomorrow. The class of 1987 has invested for this project.

The ITRC has been equipped with interactive teaching technology.

The students have been provided with large 18.5" LCD displays and full power client machines. It is a 40 student facility. The ITRC resource center cost is approximately Rs 10 million.


Doc finds centipede in lunch parcel

A female doctor of the Kilinochchi Government Hospital found a centipede in a lunch parcel purchased from the hospital canteen.

She found the centipede among the curries. The doctor showed the 'special delicacy' to her colleagues and hospital director.

The hospital canteen is managed by the hospital's Welfare Association.


Road to be opened

The Point Pedro Urban Council has passed a resolution to open the road that starts from Point Pedro town and pass along the Point Pedro - Valvettithurai sea beach road for vehicular traffic.

A resolution to permit the resettlement of twenty families on lands along the beach and commence a bus service along the beach road was also passed.


Tsunami alert towers installed

Tsunami alert towers have been installed in Delft, Uduturai Valvetithurai and Manalkaddu. These have been installed to alert the people of any on coming natural disaster such as a Tsunami.

A tower is to be installed at Suppar Madam Point Pedro and Mandaithivu as well.


Demonstrations

Two mass demonstrations condemning the resolution against Sri Lanka at the Geneva Conference on January 27 were held in Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Vavuniya.

The Jaffna demonstrations were arranged by the Jaffna SLFP Organiser Ramanathan Angayan, EPDP Parliamentarian Silvestri Allantain and EPDP Jaffna organiser K. Kamalenthiran (Kamal). Northern Province Governor Maj. Gen. G.A. Chandrasri and women's organisations also took part in the demonstration.

The demonstration started from Jaffna Muniappar kovil and converged at the Jaffna bus stand.

The demonstrators carried placards and shouted slogans in support of the Sri Lanka government. They pledged their solidarity with the government.

In Kilinochchi, there were two demonstrations. The demonstrations were led by EPDP parliamentarian M. Chandrakumar and Kilinochchi organiser Geethanjali.

The demonstration started from the Kilinochchi Secretariat and marched along the A9 road. Many government servants participated in the demonstration.

In Vavuniya, a demonstration started from the Vihara on Kandy road and marched along Bazaar road and reached the Vavuniya clock tower. Many government servants and Buddhist priests participated in the demonstration.
