Nurses strike called off, allowances increased

The Public Service United Nurses’ Union has called off its strike scheduled for March 2 after Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena agreed to grant their demands, including several increases, such as, the payments made to nursing lecturers, uniform payments for nurses and introducing a new payment for telephone bills of nurses.

E. M. G. Edirisinghe dies

A veteran cinema critic and famous author E. M. G. Edirisinghe passed away yesterday. The funeral will be held today at Kohuwala public cemetery. His remains are lying at Kalubowila Jayaratne funeral parlour.

Edirisinghe was an employee of the Inland Revenue Department and he functioned as an Attorney-at-Law too. He was a member of the Public Performances Board and was a Jury member and a chairman of Presidential, Sarasaviya, OCIC and Swarna Sanka Awards.


Munidasa Cumaratunga death anniversary

A ceremony to mark the 68th death anniversary of great scholar Munidasa Cumaratunga will be held on March 2 at 8.30 am at the open air stage at Rambewa Maha Vidyalaya Anuradhapura under the patronage of North Central Province Governor Karunaratna Divulgane.
