Religious ceremonies mark D R Wijewardene's 126th birth anniversary

The 126th birth anniversary of Lake House founder D R Wijewardene falls today. He was born on February 23, 1886. A series of religious events have been organised by the management and staff of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited to mark the anniversary.

An all-night pirith chanting will be held today followed by a Sanghika Dana to the Maha Sangha the next day.

Wijewardene pioneered the publication of a number of newspapers in all three languages and was instrumental in guiding ANCL to great heights.

A devout Buddhist, he contributed generously towards the development of many temples in the country.

He passed away in June 1950.
