Marichyasan (The Sage Twist)
Marichi literally means a ray of light (of the sun or moon). The
asana derives from the seer named richi. He is the son of Brahma and
Chief of the Maruts (shining ones), the war-like storm gods.
He's one of the seven (sometimes 10 or 12) seers or lords of
creation, who intuitively 'see' and declare the divine law of the
universe. Marichi is the great-grandfather of Manu, the Vedic Adam and
the 'father' of humanity.
Step 1 - Sit on the mat. Extend your right leg. Keep the heel
of your left leg near the upper thigh of your right leg by bending at
the knee. Keep the heel as close to the sitting bone as possible. Face
forward. Lift your left hand so that your palm is facing forward. Your
right hand should be on the ground. Breathe in and out for about 10
seconds.
Step 2 - Drape your right hand over your left leg backwards
towards the knee area. Place your right hand backwards across your
spine. Try to grip your other hand with the fingers intertwined behind
your back.
Step 3 - This is a back view of the asana. Keep your
outstretched leg straight. As a safety guideline, make sure not to twist
your back too far or you may worsen any back pain you currently feel.
Stay in this asana for several seconds. Relax and perform the asana to
the right side.
