Mosquito breeders taken to task

Legal action has been taken against 6,182 identified owners of houses and other business complexes where dengue mosquito breeding places were found during the Mosquito Control Week conducted by the Health Ministry from January 16 to 22.

This is stated in a report on the campaign submitted to Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena by Dr B K R Batuwanthuduwa at the Ministry premises yesterday.

The report said 465,917 houses and complexes were subjected to inspection during the week's campaign and of them, 80,920 were detected as possible mosquito breeding places.

Dengue mosquito larvae were found in 10,615 places during the campaign and of them 6,182 were identified as places having dengue mosquito larvae at a dangerous level.

The Mosquito Control Week was also carried out in the Jaffna District and Kurunegala District on a successful note. In Colombo District, 20,701 houses and complexes were inspected and out of it 2,509 were from the Colombo Municipal area.
