Numerous Buddhist activities to mark Independence

Many Buddhist activities have been organized by the Buddhist Affairs Department and the Buddhasasana and Religious Affairs Ministry to mark the 64th Independence day, a Ministry spokesman said.

The main religious activities will be held at Independence Square, Colombo -7 and at the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, Anuradhapura. An all night Pirith Chanting ceremony will be held under the patronage of Most Ven Weweldeniye Medhalankara Thera at Independence Square, Colombo -7 on February 2 at 9.30 pm. Prime Minister D M Jayaratne and Buddhasasana and Religious Affairs Deputy Minister M K A D S Gunawardana will also be present. Religious observances will be held at the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura at 6.30 am on February 4.

'These religious activities will be held under the guidance of Atamastanadipathi and Central and North Central Province Chief Sanghanayake Ven Pallegama Siri Nivasa Thera and with the patronage of Prime Minister D M Jayaratne' , he said.
