All set for 64th Independence Day celebrations

All arrangements are in place to hold the 64th Independence Day
celebrations themed "Let's make the nation the Wonder of Asia" at the
Sri Sambudhdhathwa Jayanthi Mawatha in Anuradhapura on February 4, under
the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Over 2000 invitees including members of the diplomatic corps will
participate. Officers of Three Forces including 55 disabled soldiers,
have also been invited.
According to Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister
W.D.J.Senewiratne, over 2600 personnel representing the three Armed
Forces, Police,Civil Security Department and National Youth Corps will
participate in the National Day parade which is followed by cultural
pageant comprising 2,552 artistes belonging to 45 cultural groups. The
cultural pageant will be organized by the Cultural and Art Affairs
Ministry.
Around 300 members of the clergy representing all religions have been
invited to participate in the 64th Independence Day celebrations. The
Buddhist religious programme will be held at the Sri Maha Bodhi by North
Eastern Province Chief Sanganayaka and Atamasthanadhipathi
Ven.Dr.Pallegama Siriniwasa Sanganayake Thera, Hindu religious
observances will be conducted under the direction of Hindu Priest B.
Gnanachandra at the Kadireshan Kovil,Anuradhapura. Muslim religious
observances will be conducted at the Mohideen Jumma Mosque under the
directions of Moulavi Al Hafil Abusali Mohamed Kaiuum, the Roman
Catholic service will be held at St.Joseph's churchl under the direction
of Bishop Norbert Andradi and the Christian service at the Maithree
Christ Church under the directions of Bishop Shantha Francis.
An all night Pirith Chanting ceremony will be held at the
Independence Square simultaneously to the Independence Day celebrations
and at will take place on February 2 from 10 pm up to 04.45 am on
February 3. Floral tribute will be placed at the D.S.Senanayake statue
at Independence Square as well. |
