Ruvini and Chameera clinch Junior National Titles



Ruvini Kannangara Chameera Ginige

Ruvini Kannangara of Musaeus College, Colombo won the Junior National Championship title for girls for the second successive year while Chameera Ginige of Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda won the junior national title for boys at the Junior National Table Tennis Championship for 2011 organised by the Sri Lanka Table Tennis Association and worked off at the Jagath Rajapakse International Table Tennis Stadium at Ganegoda off Peradeniya on Friday night.

Fourteen year old Ruvini Kannangara who won this title in 2010 was ranked bottom seed and she was up against the top seed Erandi Warusawithana of Dharmasoka College in the finals for girls under 18, she put up a stirring display to win the junior national title with an upset.

She lost the first set 10/12 and drew level in the second set with a 11/7 win. But lost the third set 8/11 to trail behind 2 - 1. But she picked up and won the next two sets 11/8 and 11/4.

Chameera Ginige of Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda had things easy against 15 year old Udaya Ranasinghe of Vidyartha College in the boys under 18 final. He won the first set 14/6 but lost the second 7/11 but completed the rout in the next three sets winning them 11/7, 11/9 and 11/9.


The results of the finals:

Girls under 10: Imasha de Silva (Dharmasoka College) beat Thanushi Rodrigo (Mahamaya Girls College, Kandy) 12/10, 11/7, 11/3.

Boys under 10: Helitha Hendawitharane (Dharmasoka College) beat Dewmith Weerasena (Lyceum College, Nugegoda) 11/7, 9/11, 11/5, 5/11, 11/7.

Girls under 12: T. Kavindhya Sheshadi (Dharmasoka College) beat Sheshala Bandara (St. Joseph’s Balika Vidyalaya, Kegalle) 12/10, 11/6, 13/15, 11/8.

Boys under 12: Chathura Gunasekera (Sussex College, Kandy) beat Denal Himsara (Dharmasoka College) 11/9, 9/11, 11/9, 11/7.

Girls under 15: Umaya Tharakie (Dharmasoka College) beat Ruvini Kannangara (Musaeus College, Colombo) 13/11, 11/8, 14/12.

Boys under 15:Udaya Ranasinghe (Vidyartha College) beat Randula Warusawitharne (Dharmasoka College) 11/6, 9/11, 11/6, 11/8.

Girls under 18 Doubles: Oshadie Gunasekera and Nuwani Navodhya (Dharmasoka College) beat Kasuni Pitigala and Naduni Surasinghe (Southlands College, Galle) 3/11, 7/11, 11/5, 11/5, 11/5.

Boys under 18 Doubles: Chameera Ginige and Imantha Udayanga (Dharmasoka College) beat Malith Dilusha (Dharmasoka College) and Prabodhana Rodrigo (St. Anthony’s College) 11/6, 13/15, 11/6, 11/8.

Under 18 Mixed Doubles: Chameera Ginige and Nuwani Navodya (Dharmasoka College) beat Imantha Udayanga and Erandi Warusawitharne (Dharmasoka College) 11/8, 5/11, 11/6, 11/2.

Girls under 18 Singles: Ruvini Kannangara (Musaeus College, Colombo) beat Erandi Warusawitharne (Dharmasoka College) 10/12, 11/7, 8/11, 11/8, 11/4.

Boys under 18 Singles: Chameera Ginige (Dharmasoka College) beat Udaya Ranasinghe Vidyartha College) 14/8, 7/11, 11/7, 11/9, 11/9.

Most outstanding player Girls: Ruvini Kannangara.

Most outstanding player Boys: Chameera Ginige.
