Thomians in commanding position

Ananda College were bowled out for a paltry 84 after which the S. Thomas batsmen put them in a strong position on the first day of their inter-school under-19 division one match which began at Mount Lavinia yesterday.

S. Thomas College won the toss and chose to field. Right hander Thushara Samarakoon was the only salvation for the Anandians with 29 runs. Right arm fast bowler Chamod Pathirana took three wickets for eight runs while right arm leg spinner Madushan Ravichandrakumar captured three wickets for 25 runs. Slow left arm chinaman Dilum Fernando bagged two wickets for 20 to wreck the Anandian batting line up.

S. Thomas College were 159 for 2 in 50 overs at close helped by a superb opening stand of 137 runs between Javed Bongso (75) and Asiri Wickramanayake (70). Bongso had eight boundaries in his knock while Wickramanayake had nine hits to the ropes in his innings.

The match will resume today at 9.30 am.
