President to open war memorial
President Mahinda Rajapaksa will open the war memorial constructed by
the Civil Defence Department in Mihintale in memory of thousands of its
members who laid down their lives for the country, on January 19.
JICA AA blood donation
A blood donation campaign organised by the JICA Alumni Association
will be held on January 21 at 9.00 a.m. at the National Blood Centre,
Narahenpita, Colombo 5. It is organized to mark the 60th anniversary of
the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Japan.
Japanese Ambassador Nobuhito Hobo will be the chief guest.
Induction ceremony
Consultant Urological Surgeon Prof Neville D Perera will be inducted
as the new President of The College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka today at
6.30 pm at Waters Edge Golf and Country Club, Battaramulla. Prof Perera
is a consultant urological surgeon of the National Hospital of Sri
Lanka. He succeeds Dr K L Fernando, senior consultant surgeon, Asiri
Hospital, Colombo.
The chief guest will be Vidya Jyothi Professor Dayasiri Fernando,
past president of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka and Chairman,
Public Service Commission.
Fund raiser
Deiyoth Dannene, a stage play produced by Sarath Kulanga will be
staged today at 3.30 pm and 6.30 pm at the National Youth Services
auditorium to raise funds for the Welfare Society of the Sri Lanka
Armoured Corp.
Move to build 210 bridges

The Economic Development Ministry will construct 210 bridges
islandwide to provide quick transport facilities for the people, said
acting Economic Development Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena.
He was addressing the media at the Information Department Wednesday.
Construction will commence during 2012 and will be completed within
three years. These will include bridges from 6m to 30m in length.
The estimated cost is Rs 6,230 million, the acting minister said.
