Special units have been deployed to probe incidents where stones are being thrown at vehicles travelling on the Southern Expressway.

Ports and Highways Ministry's spokesman told the Daily News that several mobile security units too have been deployed round the clock by the Southern Expressway Traffic Police Division to arrest the persons and gangs responsible.

Five complaints have been received by the Police of stones being thrown at vehicles plying the Expressway so far and among those complaints are regarding damage caused to 10-15 vehicles. However, no suspect has been arrested. He said that those involved will be strictly dealt with by the law. Policemen in mufti would also be on the look out for trouble-makers.

He said a majority of the incidents were reported between the Welipenna and Dodangoda interchanges of the Expressway. Recently, the Southern Expressway Traffic Police Division was informed by former MP Baddegama Samitha Thera after the car which he was travelling in was stoned on the Expressway.

The Police informed motorists travelling along the Expressway to inform the police on 1969 immediately if such incidents occur.
