'Police alone cannot minimize accidents'

"The police alone cannot minimize accidents. We need the co-operation of the public and voluntary organizations in this connection", Inspector Ranjith Vitharana, OIC of the Gokarella Police told the Daily News.

He said, several steps have been taken by the Gokarella Police to minimize road accidents on the Kurunegala-Dambulla main road. According to the Police, 160 road accidents have taken place in the Police area during last year resulting in 20 deaths.

The number of persons severely injured in these accidents was 50.

About 301 drivers who were driving under the influence of liquor were also taken into custody.

As a first step, the Police has taken action to conduct a series of awareness programmes to make drivers aware of road rules.
