‘Thane’ no threat

The cyclone ‘Thane’ is most unlikely to hit Sri Lanka directly according to its latest position, Meteorology Department Duty Forecaster P G Yasaratne told the Daily News yesterday.

He said that the cyclone was 800 km away from Trincomalee towards the Northeast by yesterday noon and it was heading towards the Eastern Coast of India. He said that the cyclone was developing further and as predicted it would not approach land until tomorrow. He said that the Northeast deep sea area of the country would be affected due to the cyclonic conditions and requested the fishermen not to go fishing in the Northeast deep sea.

He observed that inland weather conditions would not be affected by the cyclone. He predicted that intermittent showers and fairly strong winds may prevail in the Northern, North Central and Eastern provinces today.
