Electric fencing to be further extended

The Agrarian Services and Wildlife Ministry will extend the present electric fence by another 250 km next year, Wildlife and Agrarian Minister S M Chandrasena said.

Addressing a Press Conference at the Agrarian Services and Wildlife Ministry. Minister Chandrasena said at present the Ministry has to maintain a 1500kms long electric fence. During the next year, the ministry has drawn up a plan to repair and maintain the fence speedily he said. The Ministry has decided to employ a guard for every 7km of the electric fence.

The ministry has launched a programme to build a natural fences, such as palm fences and jute fences, he said.

To protect the elephant population in the country the, ministry will introduce speedlimit on railway lines which elephants use to cross endangering their lives. This will be implemented in collaboration with the Department of Railway, he said. PK
