Dr. Upali Banagala retires
Dr. Upali Banagala, a well-regarded, high level consultant at
National Hospital will be retiring from today. Being a son of a
well-known Ayurvedic physician, Dr. Banagala reached the zenith in
Western medicine.
Following his primary education in Ananda College Colombo, Dr.
Banagala entered Colombo Medical Faculty in 1973 for higher education.
In 1997 after the medical internship he joined the General Hospital,
Colombo as a junior medical officer. Furthering his career as a surgeon,
Dr Banagala successfully completed his postgraduate studies in surgery
and qualified as an orthopaedic surgeon. He was fortunate to begin his
consultant career in the National Hospital replacing Dr. Parameshwaram
in 1999.
Dr. Banagala was an academic-oriented professional who structured
many academic activities in orthopaedic surgery.
He initiated Sri Lanka Orthopaedic Association in 1991 and continued
to serve in the Board of Study Surgery since 1995 to date. He is a
popular teacher among the post-graduate trainees for his commitment,
kindness and skills. Dr. Banagala's Surgical Skills are recognized
locally and internationally.
He is also a highly-regarded specialist doctor by the public. The
contribution he made to develop orthopaedic surgery in Sri Lanka is
priceless. He is the first Orthopaedic surgeon to be honoured by College
of Surgeons in Sri Lanka by electing him as its President in 2006. In
spite of his retirement from government service he will continue to
operate in private sector and involve in academic activities. |
