Police rewards top 383 m

Over Rs 383 million had been granted as rewards to 83,896 police officers up to November this year from the Police Rewards Fund, Irrigation and Water Resources Management Minister and Leader of the House, Nimal Siripala de Silva said in Parliament yesterday.

A total of 637,682 police officers had been granted over Rs 2,293 million as rewards since 2005.

The minister stated that nearly Rs 2,668 million is remaining in the Police Rewards Fund as at present.

He stated that the fund is enriched through depositing of half or any other portion of the fines, which are being imposed by the courts for the suspects who are being taken into custody and produced before courts by the police officers in the event of performing the duties in curbing the crimes and in raids.

Furthermore, interest of the fixed bank accounts, which have been invested by using the extra money of this fund, are being deposited to the fund, he explained.

The amount of financial assets of the fund in 2010 was Rs 245 million, he said.

The minister was responding to a question raised by UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekera.
