Azwer deplores attack on Editor
Questions silence of Free Media Movement campaigners:
Condemning the attack on Lakbimanews Editor Rajpal Abeynayake in
Parliament on Wednesday, UPFA Parliamentarian AHM Azwer questioned the
silence of those persons who express concern for human rights and the
champions of media freedom. Speaking during an adjournment motion on
Wednesday, Azwer said: "Sir, I just want to remind you about the attack
on Editor, Rajpal Abeynayake, who is hospitalized and who is now
receiving treatment there.
He is almost a disabled person now. He is the Chief Editor of
Lakbimanews; a media person and also a prominent lawyer.
Sir, the assailant is also a lawyer who himself professes the
protection of human rights in the country. This must be condemned in no
uncertain terms in this House, Sir, and I am very happy that the
Minister of Social Services is also here and I hope that he would go and
see Mr. Rajpal Abeynayake and take appropriate action. Furthermore, the
Daily News of December 7, 2011 states, I quote "Editor's attacker skipe
inquiry, going in to read from the Daily News report of Dec 7, Azwer
asked.
Where are these people who are concerned about the human rights?
Where is the freedom of media? Ko me gollange cardboard. Ei me golla
Fort Railway Station ekata yanne neththe.
(Where are their cardboards. Why aren't they going to the Fort
Railway Station"). I ask the Minister in the name of the Free Media
Movement to inquire into this matter." |
