Bus stand lacks facilities

The Galewela bus stand, located between Dambulla-Kurunegala main road
has become a muddy pool during rainy days causing hardships to commuters
while cattle are frequently lodging here creating difficulties. There
are no basic facilities available.
Wayfarers' rest in a dilapidated state

Wayfarers' rest or Ambalama is not much in use today. However it has
a history-related value.
A century old Ambalama at Elangipitiya is in a dilapidated state. The
Pradeshiya Sabha - Aranayaka should renovate this age-old rest.
Electricity pirates netted

Four people who had allegedly pirated electricity, were fined Rs
10,000 each by Horana Magistrate Mahinda Ranasingha. The magistrate also
ordered the first suspect to pay Rs 88,564.88, the second Rs 32,304.40,
the third Rs 62,145.50 and the fourth Rs 60,090.90 totalling Rs
2,43,105.68 to the Ceylon Electricity Board. The uspects was residents
of Pokunuwita, Galpata and Bandaragamaareas.
Timber transported sans licence

A person who is alleged to have transported jak timber worth Rs
48,622 without a licence, was fined Rs 20,000 by Horana Magistrate
Mahinda Ranasingha. The magistrate also ordered to confiscate the
timber. The suspect is a resident of Padukka, Udumulla area.
Doggy dispute before Court

Two men in Ruwanwella claimed ownership of a Pomeranian dog and they
sought police help to solve their problem. They were before the OIC with
the dog. They gave different ages to the dog. The police could not solve
the issue and was taken to Courts.
The magistrate hearing the versions of both men instructed the police
to send the dog to the authorities to ascertain the age of the dog so
that the real owner can be found.
Boy dies from tree fall injuries

Two friends were riding push-bicycles to buy ornamental fish on
Friday when fate sealed the life of one boy, when, a large coconut tree
fell down right on him killing him instantly while the other boy with
minor injuries escaped. The boy who succumbed to fatal injuries was
M.Steve Dabarera (12 years), a student of St. Sebastian’s College,
Madampe. Madampe police are conducting investigations.
New building opening
The Galle regional office will be shifted to a newly constructed
building at No. 7/4 Wakwella Road, Galle. The building will be opened by
Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne at 10 am today. Among Invitees will be
Southern Province Chief Minister a few other members of Parliament,
Treasury Secretary and government officials.
Exhibition of Digital Copies of Tagore
To commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Nobel Laureate poet
Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo is
organizing an exhibition of photographs of his travels to South East
Asia, China and Sri Lanka titled Pilgrimages to the East and an
exhibition of Digital Copies of Tagore Paintings titled Artist
Rabindranath Tagore.
Cultural Affairs and Arts Minister T B Ekanayake will inaugurate the
exhibition in the presence of Indian High Commissioner Ashok K Kantha at
6 pm on December 2 at J.D.A. Perera Gallery, 46 Horton Place, Colombo 7
and it will remain open for public viewing from 11 am to 7 pm from
December 3 to 8, 2011.
Get-together
The Colombo Race Course Morning Walkers have arranged an X'mas season
get-together on Friday, December 2 at 7.30 pm at the "Light House
Galley" on Chaithya Road, Galle Face (opposite the Light House) managed
by the Sri Lanka Navy.
New Myanmar envoy
The Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar with the
concurrence of the Government will appoint U Myo Lwin as the Ambassador
of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to Sri Lanka in succession to U
Ohn Thwin.
Book launch
The launching of the book titled "Sivaththamil Selvi Thangammah
Appakuttys Vaalviyal Panikal" will take place on Saturday at
Bambalapitiya Saraswathy Hall, Colombo 4 commencing from 4.30 pm.
"Kambavaruthy" E. Jeyaraj of Kamban Kalagam will preside. D Eeswaran
will be the chief guest while former Hindu Cultural Minister P.P.
Devaraj and Director of Hindu Religious and Cultural Affairs Shanthi
Navukkarasan will be the special guests.
Rock debris cleared

The channel from Hambantota Mahinda Rajapaksa Harbour mouth to the
international maritime route is clear now, Ports Deputy Minister Rohitha
Abeygunawardena said. Debris of the blasted bedrock in the ocean depth
near the Hambantota harbour were completely removed by yesterday.
Two kilometre length of the naval channel to the international
maritime route is clear now, the deputy minister added.
Any ship can enter the harbour without any obstacle with the removal
of debris, he added. |
