Farming implements for Trinco families

Over 230 farmer families in the Trincomalee district, received farming implements under the patronage of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Deputy Minister Susantha Punchinilame recently.

The minister distributed water motors and water pumps.

He also distributed loans among them under low interest rates. He gave away certificates to 10 persons who completed a self-employment training course.


Dhamma school examination

The dhamma school examination will be held in 3,758 centres countrywide on November 27 at 8.30 am.

787,692 students will sit for the examination from 10,024 Dhamma schools in 311 Sasanarakshaka Balamandala in 20 Districts throughout the country.

The Buddhasasana and Religious Affairs Ministry, Buddhist Affairs Department and All Ceylon Sasanarakshaka Mandala will organize the examination.


Fined for power piracy

Two persons found guilty of tapping electricity illegally were fined Rs 10,000 each by Horana Magistrate Mahinda Ranasingha.

The Magistrate ordered the first suspect, a woman to pay Rs 135,057.14 and the second suspect to pay Rs 71,260.20 to the Ceylon Electricity Board.

The suspects were the residents of Yalagala, Halthota area.


Colombo YMCA carol service

The annual YMCA carol service of the Colombo will be held on Saturday December 3 at 5.30pm in the Colombo YMCA Gymnasium, 39, Bristol Street, Fort, Colombo 1.Choirs from leading schools and institutions will be participating.


Annual General Meeting

The annual general meeting of the Past Pupils Association of Anula Vidyalaya will be held on November 27 at 9am at the main hall of Anula Vidyalaya.

All past pupils are invited.


Athulathmudali Memorial Oration

The Lalith Athulathmudali Memorial Oration organized by the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS) will be held tomorrow at its auditorium. The event coincides with the 75th birth anniversary of the minister and the donation of part of his library to the BCIS. A collection of books will be presented to the library by the minister's brother, Dayanthe Athulathmudali.

University of Delhi Vice Chancellor Prof Dinesh Singh as chief guest will deliver the Lalith Athulathmudali memorial lecture titled 'Towards an Education Policy for South Asia in the 21st Century'. The meeting will be chaired by International Monetary Cooperation Senior Minister Dr Sarath Amunugama.

Advisor to the President and member of the BCIS Board of Studies Sunimal Fernando and Dayanthe Athulathmudali will also address the gathering. Prof Singh will be introduced by BCIS Board of Studies acting chairman Rajah Kuruppu while the vote of thanks will be proposed by BCIS Director Nilmini Elapata.


All-Island One-Act Drama Competition

The all-island One-Act Drama Competition will be held tomorrow at the British School Auditorium. This competition is organized by the Institute of Western Music and Speech (IWMS).

The competition's semi-finals were held at the same venue. Five schools were selected by judges for the finals in the Junior and Open categories.

The finalists are: Junior: Holy Family Convent, Kalutara, Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo 8 and St. Lawrence's Convent, Colombo 6. Open: Good Shephered Convent, Colombo 13 and Leeds International School, Panadura. Tickets are available at the IWMS office.

The IWMS was founded in 1960 and since then the institute has been rendering a yeoman service to students and teachers. The institute organized this event for government and private schools.


Ayurveda Shasthri

The annual ayurvedic examination Ayurveda Shasthri will be held on November 26 and 27 and December 3 and 4 in three centres.

The centres are Susamayawardana, Borella, Dangedera Jayawardana, Galle and D B Welagedara, Kurunegala.

Public talk

A public talk in English on 'The role of the Sense Doors' will be delivered by Asoka Devendra at the Meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society tomorrow at 4.30 pm at Maithree Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya. All are welcome.


Vidyartha get-together

Vidyartha College, Kandy Old Boys' Association Colombo Branch get-together will be held on November 26 at 7 pm at the Grand Oriental Hotel in Colombo.


Prize giving

The annual prize giving of St Joseph's Girls' School will be held on December 2 at 1.30 pm at the school main hall. Prof Kshanika Himburegama will be the chief guest.


Get-together

St Peter's College, Colombo 4 will hold the pre 70's batch fourth annual get-together at the Raja Bojun Restaurant tomorrow at 7.30 p.m.

Sam the Man will be in attendance. It is coordinated by Harold Jansz, an old boy of the college.


Free medical camp

A free medical camp organized by Kumpulan Melayu, Battaramulla KMB - Special Projects Committee will be held at Rukmalgama Community Centre tomorrow from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm. The public can check their eyes, pressure and fasting blood sugar free of charge.


Variety show

The annual variety entertainment presented by pre-school students of Sharada Preschool, Molligoda, Wadduwa will be held on November 27 at 2 pm, Principal S M Gnanalatha said.
