Yarlpanam festival

The Thai Pongal festival will be transformed into Yarlpanam festival and cultural events portraying the traditions and glory of Tamils will be conducted for 15 days from January 5-15.

The mayor of Jaffna has solicited the cooperation of Jaffna University, Jaffna Chamber of Commerce, Jaffna Traders Association and the Tamils cultural associations in Jaffna district to conduct a mega Tamil festival for the entire world to know the richness and glory of Tamil culture and traditions. Contests in dance, drama, nattu koothu, koladam, karakam dance, swimming and boat racing will be the highlights of the festival.

Several jewellery thefts

Rs 5 million worth jewellery (83 gold sovereigns) and mobile telephones have been burgled in a house near the Jaffna Secretariat, in another house at Punnalaikadduvan Rs 3.3 million worth gold jewellery, video camera and mobile telephones have been burgled. The robbers had gained entry into the house by removing the tiles. The gang had come with their faces in masks. In the robbery near the Jaffna kachcheri the robbers had attacked the woman in the house and she was admitted to Jaffna Teaching hospital. The Jaffna and Chunnakam Police are investigating.
