One dies in clash

One person died and three others were admitted with cut injuries to the Karapitiya hospital following a clash at a supermarket in Gintota on Thursday night. Among the injured is the suspect involved in the clash. He is warded under police guard. The deceased was identified as M B M Murafil (22) of Maha Hapugala, Gintota. Galle Police is investigating.


Lorry falls into canal

A lorry plying on the Medawachchiya – Mannar road ran off the road on the Periyakattu Bridge and fell into the Canal below along with the left railing on the bridge on the wee hours of Thursday. A person seated by the side of the driver was injured and admitted to the Settikulam hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The deceased was identified as Mohamed Farshad (25) of Kaththankudy.

Settikulam Police are investigating.


Landslide kills one

Two persons building a retaining wall near a house in Hapugaspitiya Gampola were injured in a landslide and admitted to the Gampola hospital on Thursday afternoon. One of the injured later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. He was identified as R G Sunil Shantha (42) of Sinhayapitiya. Gampola Police is investigating.


Suspect caught with porn DVDs

A person in possession of DVDs containing pornographic films was arrested by the Polonnaruwa Police along with two DVDs, a video deck and a TV set during a raid conducted in Polonnaruwa on Thursday. The suspect was due to be produced before the Polonnaruwa magistrate yesterday. Police investigations are continuing.


Arrested for violation of Act

Two persons engaged in duplicating well known films and selling them by copying them into DVDs in contravention of the provision of the Intellectual Property Act were arrested by the Alawathugoda Police along with 05 copied DVDs during raids conducted on two video parlours in Alawathugoda on Thursday.
