A series of religious programmes, including a Bodhi pooja organized by the Prime Minister’s Office to mark President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s 66th birthday and first anniversary of his second term in office, was held at the Prime Minister’s official residence – Visumpaya yesterday. Ven Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera and Religious Affairs Ministry Coordinating Secretary Ven Aghere Kassapa Thera conducted the religious rites. Here Prime Minister D. M. Jayratne and his wife Anula participating in the religious programmes. Private Secretary to the Prime Minister Anuradha Jayaratne and Buddhasasana and Religious Affairs Ministry Secretary Casian Herath were also present.

The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited marked President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s 66th birthday and the first anniversary of his second term in office yesterday by conducting a Sanghika Dana which followed an all night pirith chanting to invoke blessings on the President and the country. Chief Justice Mrs Shirani Bandaranayke and Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem are seen at the opening of the District Court complex in Point Pedro in Jaffna.

The luxury cruise ship, MV Aid Adiva, arrived at the Port of Colombo on November 17 with 2,023 passengers onboard. AID Adiva is operated by the German cruise line AIDA Cruises and has started its voyage from Muscat. The 252 meter long ship had called on Cochin in India prior to Colombo. It has a displacement of 68,500 tons and its operated by a crew of 601 personnel.

The Annual Advanced Course for cadets ended at the National Cadet Corps Training Centre, Rantembe on November 14. A cadet from each school with a Cadet Platoon followed the course. Forty-eight boy cadets and 21 girl cadets participated from Mannar, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu areas. The passing-out parade of the course was held on November 13. The salute was taken by Major General Gamini Jayasundara RWP RSP. Here, the best Boy Cadet-Cpl Vithanage TA of Mihintale MV and the Best Girl Cadet, Cpl Kajali J of Jaffna Arunodya MV with the Director and Senior Officers.
