Cartriges seized

Kotahena Police seized 278 live cartridges of various types concealed inside PVC pipes and hidden between two walls in a common public toilet in Vidyalaya Mawatha, Kotahena on Thursday afternoon, the Police said in a release. No arrests have been made. Investigations are continuing.

Meanwhile, Peradeniya Police found a live grenade of foreign make hidden in a steep incline at Sarasavigama road, Hindagala on Thursday afternoon.


Seminars, lectures

The Kalutara District Association of the Justices of the Peace has launched a programme to hold seminars and lectures and set up a fund to provide loans for their members.

A scholarship scheme will also be introduced. A book containing the names of all Justices of the Peace and their functions will be released. A membership drive has also been launched, association president H D Chandradasa said.

Applications for membership may be made with a self-addressed stamped envelope to Secretary/Association of Justices of the Peace, 70/1, Hathbodiya Mawatha, Minuwanpitiya, Panadura.


Exhibition and symposium

The Sri Lanka Commerce and Industry Chamber will conduct an exhibition and symposium on Indian beauty culture and beauty culture parlours in Renaissance Hotel in Mumbai, India. It is to be held from January 31 to February 1, 2012.

Creating new bonds among those involved in beauty culture, presenting awards and acquiring new knowledge, promoting their services and equipment and giving an opportunity to present their new creations are the main objectives of this two-day exhibition.

The symposium will focus on the current state of the Indian beauty culture scene and problems and issues faced by the beauticians. An awards ceremony too will be held.

Tagore's dance-drama restaged

The Indian Cultural Centre is restaging Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore's dance-drama Shaap Mochan at the Bishop's College Auditorium, Colombo 3, on November 22 at 6.30pm, as a part of the celebrations commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Tagore.

Irrigation and Water Resources Management Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva will be the Chief Guest.

The drama is restaged in various parts of Sri Lanka. The drama has been choreographed by Ashimbandhu Bhattacharjee, a noted Kathak exponent and Bimbavati Devi, a well-known Manipuri danseuse, retitling it as Prabhu Amar Priyo Amar.

Rabindranath Tagore has a very special connection with Sri Lanka and his three visits here in 1922, 1928 and 1934 left an abiding imprint in the country.

Help needed

A S H Chamika, 20, has been diagnosed with relapsing and dremitting multiple sclerosis with minimal neurological deficits and will benefit from P interferon therapy which is the only medication available in the country to minimize further neurological deterioration.

Corpse in lake

A body of a well built person was found floating in the Kandy lake recently. Police fished out the body following public information. According public information, his body and the face seemed to be smashed. Police investigations have not ruled out foul play.


MP Joseph Michael Perera's aunt passes away

UNP Gampaha District Parliamentarian and former Speaker Joseph Michael Perera's aunt Vinifreeda Perera passed away at the age of 90 years. She is also the mother of former Senior Assistant Secretary (Media) to Fisheries Ministry Earnest Fernando.

The funeral will take place at the Roman Catholic cemetery in Kanuwana, Ja-Ela on the 22nd of November at 3.30 pm.
