O-L mail distribution to continue

Postal service unions at the Central Mail Exchange Centre engaged in trade union action have agreed to distribute mail related to the forthcoming Ordinary Level examination without delay, Postal Services Minister Jeewan Kumaratunga said.

Union members will distribute exam related letters including admission cards, identity card and others to the address of examination candidates disregarding trade union action, the minister said.

Postal Services Ministry Secretary Hemasiri Fernando advised officials to prepare a mechanism to distribute examination related mails without delay.

The postal trade union coalition, which includes 16 trade unions, launched a hunger strike and are boycotting overtime duty demanding the immediate removal of the Postmaster General.

Minister Kumaratunga earlier appointed a three member committee to inquire into the allegations levelled against the Post Master General.

The minister said the charge sheet will be forwarded to the Public Administration and Home Affairs Ministry and the Cabinet to take action by the Postal Services Ministry on Monday.
