Presidential pledge to combat child abuse

President Mahinda Rajapaksa committed him self supporting the effort of converting the country into a centre where rights of children are protected and child abuse is prevented by placing his signature on a pledge to this effect at Temple Trees yesterday.

A countrywide programme to obtain 200,000 signatures for the pledge to save children from abuse was launched in all districts yesterday. This programme is organized by the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) with the coordination of the Child Development and Women's Affairs Ministry.

Deputy Minister M L A M Hisbullah said this programme will help arouse a sense of responsibility while making people aware of child protection.

NCPA chairperson Anoma Dissanayake said that launching this programme on the birthday of the President who is dedicated to give the best to the children, would be an honour for him.
