Tortoise killers fined

Three suspects found guilty killing two tortoises were fined Rs. 30,000 each totalling Rs. 90,000 by Matara Chief Magistrate Udesh Ranatunga. According to the Fauna and Flora Act, tortoises are protected animals. Killing them is prohibited, Police said.


Visitor ends journey

A Sri Lankan who came from London to spend his holidays with his relations at Karaveddi in Point Pedro lost his life in a van-bus accident at Puttalam on Wednesday. The relations took him from Katunayake air port to Jaffna in a van.

On the way the van collided with a bus and he was killed. A young girl in the van was severely injured and admitted to Colombo National hospital. The deceased was identified as Thiyagarajah Selvaruban, 34, of Karaveddi, Point Pedro.


Exhibition and Investment Forum

The Mannar Agriculture,Livestock, Technology and Machinery Exhibition and the Mannar Investment Forum will be held on November 12 and 13 at the Murunkan Maha Vidyalayam, Murunkan, Mannar.

Industry and Commerce Minister Rishad Bathiudeen will open the exhibition.

Mannar District Secretary N.Vethanayaham will be the chief guest on November 13.

The Mannar Investor Forum will be held on November 12 at 10.00 am at Murunkan Maha Vidyalayam, Murunkan, Mannar. RD


Lecture at BCIS

The Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS) will host a special lecture for students of international relations at its auditorium tomorrow from 9.00 am to 11.00 am.

The speaker will be Vice President and Senior Fellow at Observer Research Foundation (ORF) in India Wilson John.

With his wide-ranging experience in the area of security and terrorism and supported by his years of research work, John will speak on 'Maoist Insurgency in India - Issues and Challenges for the State'. The lecture is open to the public.

ORF is a premier think tank in Delhi, pursuing the development and discussion of policy alternatives and research in international relations, security, politics and governance and economy and development in the country.

John's area of research includes Pakistan, India's neighbourhood policy and terrorism.

He has written extensively on terrorism and security issues in the Terrorism Monitor, Jamestown Foundation, Washington and Washington Times.

He is also an experienced journalist and has authored and edited many books on security related issues concerning India.


Book launch

Cop in the Crossfire, a book authored by former Senior DIG Merril Gunaratne will be launched at the Mahaweli Auditorium today at 4.30 pm.

The keynote speakers will be Fellow of the Institute of Nuclear Engineers of Great Britain Mano Chanmugam and Editor, author and media consultant Gaston de Rosayro.

Inspector General of Police N.K. Illangakoon and retired IGP T. Anandarajah will be the guests of honour.
