Woman gets suspended sentence for infanticide

A woman found guilty of committing the murder of her day-old infant was sentenced to two years imprisonment suspended for 10 years and fined Rs 15,000.

In default of the fine, a further six months imprisonment was imposed by Kurunegala High Court judge U L Jayasuriya. Samarakoon Mudiyanselage Seelawathi, 32, of Iguruwatta was indicted by the Attorney General with committing the murder of her day old infant.
