Legendary boxing manager Brusa dies at 89
Argentine boxing manager Amilcar Brusa, who counted 14 champions in
his corner including ring legend Carlos Monzon, has died at the age of
89, his family announced on Friday.
Brusa was born on October 23, 1922 in Cologne Silva in the northern
province of Sante Fe, the town where he lost his fight to acute
bronchitis on Thursday. A former amateur heavyweight fighter who retired
when he was unable to represent his country at the 1948 London Olympics
Brusa made his name with Monzon, regarded by many as the best
middlweight boxer in history.
He held the undisputed world middleweight title for seven years,
mounting 14 successful title defences. However, out of the ring Monzon
was a tortured soul. With a history of physical abuse towards women he
was jailed for 11 years in 1989 for killing his second wife and he died
in a car crash on a weekend release from prison in 1995.
One of Brusa's other great champions was Salvadoran-American
lightweight Carlos "Famoso" Hernandez.
