Katina Pooja at Gangaramaya Temple

The annual Katina Pinkama for bhikkhus who observed the Vas season at the Gangaramaya, Hunupitiya, Colombo 02, will take place on November 8.

The date of Podi-Hamuduruwo’s first ordination also occurs on this day. Along with the Katina offerings the following items too could be made available. Crockery, pillow cases and bed sheets, plasticware, mats, electric bulbs and fluorescent bulbs, rubber mats, articles needed for use in the Dana Sala. Also you could donate equipment for the Kataragama Meditation Centre.

An all night Pirith Chanting will be held on November 7. The Perahera bearing the “Katina Cheevaraya” will leave No. 07, Elibank Road, Colombo 05, at 4 a.m. on November 8. On November 8 a discourse on the Merit of Robe-offering will take place from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.


Eid-Ul-Adha Festival Prayers

”The Eid-Ul-Adha Festival Prayers will be organized by the Memon Association of Sri Lanka on the Eid-Ul-Adha Festival day on November 6, at 8.00 a.m. at the Galle Face Green.” In case of rain on the Festival day the prayers will take place at the Memon Association Hall at No. 320/1, Galle Road, Colombo 3.


Royal Asiatic society lecture

The role of the Buddhist Education Movement in changing the trends of Lankan history.” will be the topic, of a lecture conducted by the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka. The speaker will be Former Director, Colleges of Education and Higher Education Ministry Padma Edirisinghe.

It will be held on October 31 at 5.00 p.m. at the Mahaweli Centre Auditorium, Colombo 7.

Students to call off lecture boycott

The Jaffna University Students’ Council will call off the boycott of lectures in deference to a request made by the leaders of civil society in Jaffna and the University Teachers Union. They will give up the boycott of lectures from today.


Mystery surrounds child’s death

Mystery surrounds the sudden death of an infant at Jaffna Teaching Hospital who was due for a DNA test. This child’s unmarried mother had accused an employee at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital as the father of the child. The employee had denied it. On the order of court the infant was sent to Jaffna Teaching Hospital for DNA test. Before the DNA test the child had died. Investigations are on regarding the sudden death of the infant.


Human rights forum in Jaffna

A Human Rights Forum to safeguard the rights of the people and relieve them of their woes has been inaugurated in Jaffna. The new forum will coordinate with the people’s representatives and take immediate action when and where human rights are violated.

They have elected the former Jaffna Municipal Commissioner C. V. K. Sivagnanam as the coordinator and the Jaffna University Students Council President S. Thavabalasingham as the Secretary and International Hindu Priests Union president Sabha Vasudeva Kurukkal, Moulavi M. A. L. Pyser, Rev. Fr. Ravichandran, Kodakoda Fishermen’s Union President Kandeepan, Journalist Ponrajah, Secretary Community Centre Union Pon. Kanagaratnam and Ariyakuddy Inthrarajah as members of the executive committee.


Lightning strikes five farmers killing two

Five farmers were struck by lightning while in a paddy field in the Kahatagasdiliya police division last Friday. Two died on the spot.

The other three who were injured were admitted by residents and police officers to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. 


'No coastline resident will be evicted'

No member of the ordinary public resident along the coastline will be evicted by the Coast Conservation Department when it implements the law prohibiting constructions along the beach front, General Manager of the Department Anil Premaratne said.

He said the Coast Conservation Act of 1981 empowered the Department to dismantle hotels and walls built obstructing beach fronts.
