Gunathilaka and Gunethi box for glory

R.M.A.B. Gunathilaka of Slimline Sports Club emerged champion in the Layton Cup Boxing Championships while S.P. Gunethi of Sri Lanka Police Sports Club made her mark in the event history winning the award for the best boxer in the women’s category at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.

Gunathilaka collected 13 points to leave T.D.N. Jayakodi (Sri Lanka Air Force SC) with the silver medal in the final of the 60kg event. D.S.K. Fernando of Sri Lanka Navy SC was adjudged the best loser in the championship when he lost to Gunathilaka in the semi finals of the same weight class.

Gunethi boxed B.N.Erandi of Thurali SC and won the battle in the final of 54 kgs category while the latter won the best female loser’s award in the championship. More than 100 male boxers and 32 women boxers vied for the titles in the ring at Sugathadasa indoor stadium.

Former president of Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka and Asian Alliance Insurance General Manager, Udeni Kiridena was the chief guest at the finals.
