Court orders classes for jaywalkers
Roshan THUSHARA
The Colombo Traffic Court yesterday ordered the Traffic Police to
conduct classes for jaywalkers. The court issued this order when 80
jaywalkers were produced before the court by Traffic Police yesterday.
The court also ordered that only those who do not participate in such
classes be produced before the court.
The magistrate issuing the order pointed out that producing a large
number of people who are arrested for jaywalking by the police distrupt
the normal court functions and ordered the police to resort to the
procedure followed by the police earlier in connection with arresting
jaywalkers.
The Traffic Police informed court that police followed a procedure to
conduct classes for the jaywalkers arrested by the Police earlier and
that procedure is no longer followed by the Police.
The Magistrate ordered the Police to restart the classes for the
arrested jaywalkers and ordered a fine of Rs 100 each against the
jaywalkers yesterday.
Colombo Traffic Police and Modera Police prosecuted.
