At least three women affected daily

Many Sri Lankan women receive burn injuries as a result of domestic violence. According to Health Ministry sources, at least three women who suffer daily from high degree burn injuries are admitted to the Colombo National Hospital while another 35 with over 30 percent of body burns are admitted to the Colombo National Hospital every month.

Gas tank explosions and welding accidents are other common ways of receiving burn injuries. The hospital is able to save the lives of persons whose bodies have suffered less than 50 percent burn injuries.

The government spends around Rs one to three million to perform plastic surgeries on patients with burn injuries.
