Puppet show
A puppet show organized by the Royal College Union will be held at
the Navarangahala at Rajakeeya Mawatha on October 21 at 6.30 pm.
The 'Sabe Vidane' - the village headman will be the first to appear
on stage to introduce the art of puppetry.
Dancing of numerous forms is an integral part of a puppet show.
A child doing 'pinum' - looping and juggling, will be followed by a 'kavadi'
dance.
The monkey dance and the skeleton dance will also be performed. Two
low country dances - 'ginikeli raksha' and the fire dance - the latter a
skit from the 'Sanni yakuma' will be included in the show.
The Kalagola story based on a Jathaka tale related in the Ummagga
Jathaka will be staged.
Sarvodaya National Awards
Applications will be received till October 30 for the Sarvodaya 17th
National Awards, says the Sarvodaya Trust Fund's Secretary. Details of
the awards and the application forms could be obtained from the
Sarvodaya headquarters, no 98, Rawatawatta Road, Moratuwa.
Preference will be given to those who have excelled in working
towards national Unity among Sri Lankans, Research and Technology, work
done in the media field for the benefit of the people and services
rendered to upgrade the standard of the people.
The funds for national awards have been raised from the cash donation
received by Dr A T Ariyarathe with various international Awards.
State Literary Awards ceremony

The State Literary Awards ceremony will be held on October 28, 2011
at 2pm at the Simon Nawagatthegama New Auditorium of the Vijayaba
Central College, Mahawa.
The State Literary Awards Festival will be held under the patronage
of Prime Minister D M Jayaratne.
Minister of Culture and Arts T B Ekanayake, Education Minister
Bandula Gunawardena, Chairman of the Arts Council of Sri Lanka Prof
Carlo Fonseka, chairman of the State Literary Panel Jayasumana
Disanayake, Secretary, Minister of Culture and Arts Wimal Rubasinghe,
scholars and writers will participate. Twenty artistes who worked for
the progress of the arts will receive special awards from the Prime
Minister.
“Katina Pinkama”
The Katina Pinkama of the Mallikaramaya, Ratmalana will be held on
October 22 and 23 under guidance of Agga Maha Panditha Ven Weligama
Gnanarathane Nayaka There the chief incumbent of Mallikaramaya and
Mahanayaka of the Amaarapura Dharmarakshitha Nikaya.
Accordingly, the “Buddha Pooja” will be performed at 6pm and a Dhamma
sermon will be delivered from 6.30pm to 7.30pm starting from Saturday
October 15 till Friday, October 21.
On Saturday October 22 there will be an all night pirith chanting
followed by the Katina Perehera on Sunday morning.
The procession carrying the Katine Vasthra will parade the streets at
4.30am on this day and return to the temple at 6.00am. Thereafter the
“Katina Vasthra” will be offered to the Maha Sangha including the Most
Ven Agga Maha Panditha Weligama Gnanarathane Nayaka Thera. The morning
Buddha Pooja will be performed at 7.30am followed by the alms-giving and
the Pirikera Pooja. A Vassavasik Cheswara Pooja will be performed at
7pm.
Beware of conmen

The public are increasingly falling victim to the machinations of
professional confidence tricksters, Police Media Spokesman SSP Maxi
Proctor said yesterday.
The latest modus operandi by these con men to use the mass media to
dupe the public.
Specially through the medium of advertising. Observing anonymity they
use bogus identity cards or aliases and use different telephone numbers
to achieve criminal intent.
The majority of the victims of the conmen are females who fall prey
to advertisements inserted in newspapers promising various educational
certificates.
These conmen obtained money as a down payment from thousands of
people to provide various items on easy payment scheme.

Applications for the MBA in HRM programme conducted by the Open
University of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Institute of Personnel
Management will be issued up to October 26, 2011 by the Open University

Off to Brazil
Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena left for Brazil on Tuesday to
attend the World Conference on Social Determinants of Health organized
by the World Health Organization (WHO), Health Ministry sources said
yesterday. The conference is to be held from October 19 to 21 in Rio De
Janeiro, Brazil.
Representatives from 118 countries will take part in this conference.
Free seminar
The Sri Lanka Institute of Printing under the Ministry of Youth
Affairs and Skills Development has organized a free seminar on Multi
Media Technology for school leavers and other industry professionals on
October 23 from 8.30 am to 2.30pm at the Sri Lanka Institute of
Printing.
