'Election results eye opener to UNP'

Premajayantha yesterday said that the people in the Colombo Municipal
Council (CMC) area have conveyed a strong message to the United National
Party (UNP) through the recently concluded Local Government election.

Referring to a comment made by UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe that
the people have sent warning signals to the government through the Local
Government election, the UPFA General Secretary said that the UPFA
gained control of 21 out of 23 Local Government bodies among which a
number of Local Government bodies that had been held by the UNP for
decades.
He said that a series of elections held during the past few years
have shown that the chances of the government in the CMC area have
increased tremendously.
Minister Premajayantha said that the UPFA gained control of all Local
Government bodies in the Hambantota District which is represented by UNP
Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa.
The UPFA polled 77,084 votes from the CMC area as against 57,158
votes received in LG election in 2006. |
