'Over 35% Lankans suffer from Osteoporosis'
Nadira GUNATILLEKE
'Around 35 percent of the Sri Lankan population suffer from
Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is no longer considered an inevitable part of
aging.
Not all old men and women are affected. It is recognized now as a
disease affecting only some men and women,' Prof. of Medicine attached
to Karapitiya Medical Faculty Prof. Sarath Lekamwasam said. Addressing a
media seminar at the Health Education Bureau yesterday to mark World
Osteoporosis Day Prof. Lekamwasam said that it is a falsehood that
drinking certain types of milk prevents Osteoporosis. Milk does not have
that much of calcium as advertised. Drinking milk alone will not prevent
Osteoporosis. Adequate intake of protein, Vitamin A, D and Calcium
during childhood and engaging in adequate physical activities in
childhood and throughout life prevents Osteoporosis. He thanked all
newspapers for carrying articles with accurate details on Osteoporosis.
According to the other speakers, the number of hip fractures recorded
in Sri Lanka in 2006 was 2,700 and it is predicted that it can increase
up to 7,000 by 2040. There are numerous inexpensive sources of required
nutrients in the traditional Sri Lankan diet. Jumping and skipping are
the most beneficial activities for the young. Brisk walking, running and
jogging can be recommended for middle aged persons. Physical activities
during childhood will ensure stronger bones. Exercise needs to be
continued throughout one's entire life to get the maximum benefits. |
