Musical Mystique, a choral extravaganza
St. Cecilia’s Choir of St. Joseph’s College will present ‘Musical
Mystique’, a choral extravaganza at St. Joseph’s College Auditorium
Sports Complex on October 29 at 6.30 pm, the organizers said.
Musical Mystique conducted by Nishanth Warnakulasooriya comprises
three segments. The opening Classical Segment is a ‘Mozart special’
featuring Requiem, followed by Kyrie, Dies Irae and Ave Verum.
It will be followed by a guest appearance by the Old Joes Choir, with
three special songs.
The organizers said St. Cecilia’s choir will demonstrate its skill
and versatility as a choral group, with a musical line-up that features
a wide range of compositions and diverse styles, including oriental
forms and languages, as well as contemporary pop songs.
Diversity is the hallmark of the Ethnic Segment: from a traditional
Sinhala Kamatha to the modern Nadee Ganga Tharanaya made popular by
Chitral Somapala; from the Tamil composition Ottagathai Kattico to
Janagana (the Indian National Anthem, arranged by A. R. Rahuman) in
Hindi, a medley of popular Sinhala golden oldies, with an invitation to
sing-along; the organizers said.
The tempo quickens in the final pop segment, with upbeat selections
from Michael Jackson (a Tenor-Bass acapella arrangement by the senior
choristers), Billy Joel’s hit song Uptown Girl and a gleefully rendered
‘Glee medley’ (which includes popular numbers such as Don’t Stop
Believing and Somebody to Love). The choral director is Francis
D’Almeida.
Musical Mystique is a fund-raiser for the Choir’s proposed Italian
tour in May next year, which will include a concert at the Vatican. The
young choristers will bring the curtain down with the Italian song Con
te Partiro (Time to say goodbye). |
