Popular vocalist Umara Sinhawansa of B n S fame launched her debut
album titled Vassanayata at a function in Hotel Ramada recently.
Prominent figures and well wishers gathered to the venue to celebrate
the occasion.
The lyrics of Vassanayata are composed by Ayesha Sinhawansa, Thusara
Karunanayake, shahan Galahitiyawa, Ashanthi de Alwis and S Michael. The
melodies are composed by Bathiya, Krishan, Ayesha Sinhawansa, Amila,
Dilhan, Rakith and Umara.
Speaking at the event seasoned lyricist Nilar N Cassim who had penned
most of Umara's hits said that Umara entered the scene when songstresses
like Nirosha Virajani and Samitha Mudunkotuwa were ruling the roost.
"However she carved a niche for herself through her unique music
style which is a collaboration of the local and west. She can sing in
diverse ranges hand had done over 150 international shows. She is an
artiste of unparalleled talent," he said.
Umara derives her musical roots from her family. She is the daughter
of musicians Tony and Ayseha Sinhawansa and the elder sister of Umaria.
She started her tuneful venture when she was 10 years by taking part in
her first sound recording. After performing on public stage at 13, Umara
went on to win accolades at many international music competition before
embarking on a singing career.
Her first break came when she took part in the 'Voice of Asia'
singing competition in Kazakhstan in 2006. She won the titles of best
new song and most popular song of the competition at the event with
Sandu.
Next she won the bronze medal at the Asia New singing Competition in
Shanghai, China.

She joined the B n S troupe with Sithak Nam Sittam Ranai. Later she
contributed to hits like Kasthuri Suwanda, Shahina, Nano, Oya Mage Nam,
Thunee Vessa and Sinaha Ko.
Umara's talents are not limited to vocals along but also to music
composition. She was the youngest sound controller at Saregama music
studios.
One of her recent triumphs is winning the bronze medal by performing
with Umariya at the Cremia Music Festival in Ukraine on September 12.
She had sun in many languages including French, Hindi and Japanese at
international festivals.
"I wanted to launch an album of my own ever since I was 11 years. My
dream came true today. I wish to thank all those who stood by my side
and supported me in this endeavour," an emotional Umara said.
