Sound of Strings
Sewalanka Foundation together with the Norwegian Embassy, Concerts
Norway and Aru Sri art Theatre will present The Sound of Strings - cello
and guitar duo; Gustavo Tavares (Cello) Anders Clemens Ĝien (Guitar) for
classical music lovers in Sri Lanka.
They will come alive on stage with two public shows on October 15 at
the Auditorium of Girl's High School, Kandy at 6.30 pm and on October 22
at the Auditorium of British School in Colombo at 6 pm. The entrance for
these concerts will be free of charge.
The artists are also scheduled to perform a series of concerts and
workshops for children and the youth in Colombo, Anuradhapura,
Polonnaruwa and Vavuniya.
They will also conduct a four-day master class for the students of
University of Visual and Performing Arts which will conclude with a
joint performance by the artists and the students on October 20 at 1 pm
at the Lionel Edirisinghe Memorial Hall at the University of Visual and
Performing arts.
This is the ninth group of Musicians touring Sri Lanka as part of a
broader music cooperation established between Concerts Norway and
Sewalanka Foundation. Norwegian Bands such as Ras Nas, The Indian Core,
Nils-Olav Johansen Quartet and SISU, Classical Evergreens Opera,
Kohinoor, Tindra, Fiddle and Dance who toured Sri Lanka previously as
well as the Gall Music Festival and Jaffna Music Festival took place as
part of this programme.
Gustavo Tavares, cello and Anders Ĝien, classical guitar will perform
guitar duets and solo pieces from different eras of classical music.
Amongst the composers are Antonio Vivaldi, Astor Piazzolla, Bela Bartok,
John Dowland and the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg."

Guitarist Anders Ĝien started playing the guitar at the age of 11,
and continued towards a professional music education at the Norwegian
Academy of Music in Oslo.
After graduation he received his diploma from
Escuela de Musica Luthier in Barcelona under the tutelage of the famous
guitarist Alex Garrobé. Mr. Ĝien has continuously searched for
brilliance by approaching the utmost of classical guitar-players such as
Manuel Barrueco, David Russell, Marco Socias, Marco Smaili and John
Williams.
Ĝien was the first Scandinavian performer to receive the prestigious
Andrés Segovia award in La Herradura. He has also received prizes in
both the princess Christiana competition in Madrid and the Alhambra
competition in Valencia. In 2002 he was selected as "Intro" musician by
Rikskonsertene.
Gustavo Tavares
Gustavo Tavares has been a student of Antonio Janigro at the
Stuttgart Musik Hochschule in Germany, where he graduated with the
highest marks in 1986. He received his Doctorate at Rutgers, the State
University of New Jersey.
He has performed throughout his home country, Brazil, and in some of
the most famous concert halls and festivals around the world. He has
appeared the Orchestra d'Archi Italiana, the National Theater Orchestra
in Brasília, and the Johannesburg Philharmonic.
He has been described as "one of the most important Brazilian names
in the classical music of our time" and is considered a specialist on
Latin American music. Together with clarinettist Paquito d'Rivera and
pianist Pablo Zinger, he created the ensemble Triangulo to present a
Latin American music repertoire.
Musical arrangements of Gustavo Tavares have recorded by artists such
as YoYo Ma and the Buenos Aires String Quartet.
