Cinnamon Grand becomes first hotel in post war era to celebrate the
country’s heritage with a first day cover depicting the unique Nuga
Gama.
The Cinnamon Hotels and Resorts chain, Cinnamon Grand Colombo added
another initiative to its growing portfolio of ‘firsts’ by becoming the
first hotel in Sri Lanka to launch a first day cover marking World
Tourism Day.
At a ceremony World Tourism Day held at Nuga Gama – the village in
the city, the first day cover depicting the 200-year old banyan tree
which is centric to Nuga Gama’s historic setting, the Gamagedara and the
rustic bridge known as the Edanda in the village was issued by Post
Master General M.K.B. Dissanayake.
The first day cover of this 30mm x 30mm Rs 5 stamp which falls into
the personalized category was presented to Economic Development Minister
Basil Rajapaksa by Cinnamon Grand General Manager Rohan Karr.” Being
World Tourism Day, it is important for us Sri Lankans to celebrate our
rural roots and given that this year’s tourism theme is Linking
Cultures, Nuga Gama becomes the ideal icon for us to link that theme to
Sri Lanka’s heritage, traditions and cultural identity,” stated Karr,
adding that the edanda depicted on the stamp is also symbolic of the
theme of linking cultures and Cinnamon Grand’s link with its indigenous
brand and rural roots.
“What we have at Nuga Gama is unique, a village in the city that
brings the entire concept of the rural Sri Lankan village into the heart
of a five star milieu within the environs of a benchmarked award winning
city hotel that has its brand attributes, the promise of indulgence.
This stamp to us, pays tribute to what Nuga Gama brings to the
country’s tourism offerings and also Cinnamon Grand’s indigenous roots
within a country that has a multiple millennia civilisation and
history,” he said.
