Eight Lankan students excel in international art contest

Eight students who participated in the Asian Students Enikki Festa
Art competition 2010-2011 organised by Japan UNESCO Association,
Mitsubishi Committee and UNESCO Societies Federation of Asia Pacific
region won prizes and awards.

A special awards ceremony organised by Sri Lanka UNESCO National
Commission was held recently at Isurupaya under the patronage of
Education Minister Bandula Gunawardana .
The Grand Prix Award winner in Sri Lanka Ama Anuttara Wickramarachchi
was invited for the award presentation ceremony in Seoul, Korea, but she
was unable to attend the festival.
Her special award was presented by Minister Gunawardana at the
ceremony.
The other winners are: Ravinie Warnika Kariyawasam (Ferguson High
School, Ratnapura) Mitusubishi PAC Award, Binithma Savidunie Warnakula
Weerasuriya (Southland Vidyalaya, Galle) APFUCA Award, Oshan Wimukthi
Abeysirigunawardane (Richmond Vidyalaya, Galle) NFUAJ Award, Dinniya
Mauraji (Southland, Galle) Excellence Award, Geesha Viraj (Sudharma
Vidyalaya, Galle) Excellence Award, Randinie Senaviratne (Parakkramabahu
National School Polgahawela) Excellence Award and Samadhi Induwara
Elancoon (Maliyadeva Girls School, Kurunegala) Excellence Award.
Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Kunio Takahashi also participated.
Vocal talent in reciting Quran:
Sri Lankan student fourth
Abdul Cader Mohamed Gani Mohamed Azmi of Sri Lanka ranked fourth
among 90 competitors representing various countries for having vocal
talent in reciting the Quran at the 15th Dubai International Holy Quran
Award competition held during the month of Ramadan 2011. He was ranked
21st in the Hifl category at the same competition.
He was awarded fourth place for his vocal performances amongst
competitors from UAE, Eygpt, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Yemen.
Azmi, 14, a student of Imam Shafie Foundation placed first at the All
Island Hifl Competition conducted by the Muslim Religious and Cultural
Affairs Department also won the first place at the All Island Hifl
Competition conducted by the Hyyathul Quran, the branch of the
Jamiyyathul Quran of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Retires after 40 years service
Mahanama Vithanage Malwana group correspondent
Police Superintendent, Gampaha Leslie Sarath Edirisuriya has retired
from police service with affect from September 20 completing nearly 40
years of service.
He served the Gampaha district as a Police Superintendent for nearly
four years. He had earlier served Maradana, Mawanella, Polonnaruwa,
Gampaha, Vavuniya, Police headquarters, Weligama, Elpitiya, Moneragala
and Batticaloa.
Within this period he has been commended 3,750 times and gained nine
special commendations from the IGP. He also successfully completed
several local and overseas courses.

organised a seminar for schoolchildren on accidents. It was
held at Royal College, Colombo presided by Senior DIG Asoka
Wijethilaka. Thirty four schoolchildren from Colombo
