Navy in 69-57 win over Otters

Navy cagers defeated Otters BC (69-57) in their Carlton Cup
basketball Division ‘A’ match at the Police Park courts yesterday.
Both teams shared honours in the first quarter scoring nine points
each. Otters players played a speedy game and were way ahead at a stage
(20-12) but lost their grip with sailors’ quick come back who they
leveled the score 25 points each in the middle of the second quarter.
Navy team scored some back to back points while securing their ring and
posted a six point lead at half time (22-16).
Losers were going on team fouls in the second quarter, allowed the
opponents to make inroads into the game. Winners scored 22 point against
16 from losers in the match-turning second quarter. Eventhough losers
put up some resistance in the third quarter by scoring 20 points against
15 from the winners sailors fiercely attacked in the final quarter and
added 23 points while restricting losers to 10 points. Navy won the
match with a 12 point margin.
T. Nithushan scored 17 points while D. Perera and D. Muthukudarachchi
added 14 points each for the winning team. T. Chathuranga (19 points)
and R. Senanayaka (14 points) were the chief scorers for the losers.
Meanwhile in a division ‘B’ match Sinha Regiment BC tamed Police ‘B’
team in their own den (57-32). Policemen were five points leading in the
first quarter (13-8) but could not maintain their lead as soldiers
played an aggressive game and gained control in the second quarter.
Winners added 20 points while restricting their opponents to eight
points in the second quarter. Winners registered a seven point lead
midway (28-21), and maintained their dominance in the second half.
Soldiers won the match with a commanding 25 point lead.
R. Wijeratne and B. Warathanna scored 17 and 14 points respectively
for the winners while S. Herath (15 points) and S. C. Leelaratne (5
points) were the best scorers for the losers. In another division ‘B’
match Four Wings BC beat Field Force Youth BC (81-68) at the Amal
International School courts. The half time scores were 36-21 in favour
of the winners. Seneviratne and Pitigala scored 20 and 18 points
respectively for the winners while L. Madushanka (21 points) and A.
Amarathunga (20 points) were the best contributors for the losers.
