The Beira Lake area is to be developed into a tourist zone to mark
‘World Tourism Day’. This will be done at a cost of Rs 30 million,
Economic Development Deputy Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena told the
Daily News.
The events are to be held from September 27 to 28 around the Beira
Lake. The programme will include developing infrastructure facilities,
natural environment and tourist attraction avenues. Among other planned
events are an art wall with the participation of 2,000 children from 150
schools, stalls by five-star hotels around the lake area, a laser show
and floats on the lake.
According to the minister, children participating in the art wall
project will be asked to draw what they think Colombo will look like in
10 years. He pointed out that the Beira Lake Tourist Zone Project will
also include a full clean up of the polluted lake and convert it into an
eye-catching spectacle.
An island of arts under the title Kaladuwa and a theatre with seating
facilities for 500 will be built in the middle of the lake and a
78-metre long chain bridge has been built to provide access to the
theatre.
